Duggar-Style Competition
As teacher and parent, how does Michelle promote healthy competition? Her answer: time.
I'll often tell my children, ''You know, time really is our friend. We want to use our time wisely, because that is our greatest resource that God entrusts to us,' writes the mom of many in her latest Parentables post.
Michelle's wristwatch is her lifeline. It's important in a homeschool setting that the kids don't compare themselves with each other. Setting a timer or a stopwatch can help them focus on their work instead of how well someone is doing.
Around the Duggar home, timers are also used while completing chores and other projects. For example, the little ones have a chart where they record how long it takes them to match a basket of socks. Each child's times are kept between them and Mommy, which fosters self-improvement.
With nineteen children who are all at different levels, Jim Bob and Michelle are constantly reminding their children that each of them has different gifts and talents. Using a timer allows the kids to compete against themselves, instead of comparing their abilities with their siblings'.
